Scholarships of the Evrytanian Association of America “Velouchi”

The Evrytanian Association of America “Velouchi” has, for many decades, served as a steadfast focal point forEvrytanians in the diaspora and as an essential link to their ancestral homeland. With respect for Evrytania’s historical journey, values, and traditions, Evrytanians in America preserve a vibrant and meaningful relationship with their native land, consistently supporting the preservation and promotion of Evrytania’s cultural heritage.
The Association’s contribution is multifaceted and is expressed through cultural, social, and charitable initiatives that strengthen the ties between the diaspora and Evrytania. At the same time, particular importance is placed on passing Evrytania’s heritage on to younger generations, so that the children and grandchildren of immigrants may come to know, appreciate, and honor their roots.
At the heart of this contribution lies the Association’s steadfast commitment to the youth of Evrytania. The scholarships, honorary commendations, and financial assistance it awards to high-school and university studentsnare not merely forms of financial support. They recognize students’ hard work, perseverance, and academic excellence, while also providing meaningful encouragement to continue their studies and pursue their goals with confidence in their abilities. Through these initiatives, the Evrytanian Association of America “Velouchi” conveys a message of trust and hope to every young man and woman from our homeland. Evrytanians in America follow the progress of the younger generation with pride, celebrate its achievements, and stand tangibly by its side, investing in knowledge and in the people who will keep the Evrytania of tomorrow vibrant and alive.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, “Velouchi” held its scholarship and honorary-award ceremony at the Evrytania  History and Culture Center in Karpenisi. Outstanding female and male students from Evrytania were honored for graduating during the 2025–2026 school year from the region’s general upper-secondary schools and vocational high schools. In total, the Association awarded $12,000 in scholarships and academic awards. This total includes the $3,000 in named scholarships established by Dimitrios and Roula Chulkas, Laura Nixon, and Panagiotis Zinelis.

In his remarks, the Association’s President, Mr. John Fragkakis, referred to the organization’s long-standing and wide-ranging contribution, as well as to the service of Evrytanians in the United States diaspora. He emphasized that, through many initiatives and on every possible occasion, Evrytanians in America demonstrate in tangible ways their love for their homeland, Evrytania, and their commitment to supporting the region’s younger generation. The event was honored by the presence of former Minister and Member of Parliament Ms. K. Bourdara; Deputy Regional Governor of the Regional Unit of Evrytania Mr. Ar. Tasios; Mayor of Karpenisi
Mr. Chr. Kakavas; Deputy Mayor for Education Ms. Chr. Sveroni; Director of the Evrytania Police Directorate Ms. Ol. Giannioti; and Director of the Evrytania Chronic Care Facility Mr. St. Fakitsas. A message was also sent by Evrytania Member of Parliament Ms. Thomais “Tzina” Oikonomou.
In accordance with the Association’s criteria, honorary commendations and financial awards were presented to the following graduates of the Karpenisi General High School: Despoina Androni, Eleni-Anna Drosini, Vasiliki Evangelodimou, Eirini Thanasoula, Vasiliki Kakavia, Chryssoula Kalyva, Konstantinos Kapsalis, Martha-Penelope Kelesidou, Alexandros Batzios, Kassiani Seleli, Klea Soulko, Panagiota Triantafyllopoulou, and Polytimi Tsoutsoura.
The following graduates of the 1st Vocational High School of Karpenisi were also honored: Charalampos Athanasiadis, Spyridon Andreou, Maria Gkoura, Aliki Neila, Ioannis Tsilikas, and Maria Moutogianni. In addition, Penelope Peroula and Afroditi-Ourania Vlachou, graduates of the Lyceum Classes of Kerasochori, as well as Eirini Stasinou, a graduate of the Lyceum Classes of Raptopoulo, received distinctions.
These awards recognize the students’ dedication and accomplishments, the support of their families, and thecontribution of their teachers. They also remind us that academic excellence is not only a personal achievement,but a source of pride for the entire local community.
The Association’s support extends beyond high-school graduation through its scholarship program for university students of Evrytanian heritage. On Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., the Athens Scholarship Committee of the Evrytanian Association of America “Veloouchi” held a scholarship awards ceremony at the Parnon Hotel in Athens, honoring the recipients for the 2025–2026 academic year. The event was made possible through the generous support of the Committee’s Vice President, Mr. Kostas Avrambos, who provided the venue and refreshments.
Following a comprehensive evaluation based on academic performance, financial circumstances, and social criteria, the Committee selected twelve students to share equally a total of $12,000 in scholarships. The 2025–2026 recipients are Maria Katsiari from Krikello, a student of Physical Education and Sport Science at theUniversity of Thessaly; Vasiliki Kapsali from Karpenisi, a Speech and Language Therapy student at the University of Ioannina; Konstantinos Lathyris from Palaioκatouno, a student of English Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Ilias Bakogiorgos from Chochlia, a student of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens; Ioanna Mpasiadima from Aniada, a student of Business Administration at the Athens University of Economics and Business; and Sofia Bourgou from Fourna, a Nursing student at the University of Patras.
The remaining recipients are Paraskevi Nikopoulou from Karpenisi, a student of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Thessaly; Vasileios Ploumpis from Krikello, a Political Science student at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; Anastasia Resiti from Chrysova, a student in the Department of Primary Educationat the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Thomas Stamoulis from Karpenisi, a student of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Thessaly; Ioanna Trianti from Psiana, a Business Administration student at the University of the Peloponnese; and Evangelos Psounos from Voulpi, a student at the Hellenic Air Force Academy.

In addition to its scholarship program in Greece, the Evrytanian Association of America "Velouchi" & actively supports the youth of the Greek diaspora in the United States, rewarding their academic efforts at some of the country's most prominent higher education institutions. For the same period, the scholarship recipients in the U.S. and their respective universities are: Nikolas Canoutas – Georgetown University Graduate School, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service; James Perivolaris – Francis Marion University; Effie Kontos – North Carolina State University; Maria Dermas – University of North Carolina Wilmington; Anthony Thomas – Western Carolina University; Constantine Ledford – University of North Carolina Charlotte; Toni Senos – University of Pittsburgh; Gus Senos – Indiana University Bloomington; Vassiliki Skarlatos – Queens University of Charlotte; Evan Kremydas – Clemson University; Georgia Giannopoulos – Wofford College; and Michael Keretsis - NC State.
